LPC & MPC Software Review Sessions
Sign Up for LPC & MPC Training

RRC is offering one-hour online review sessions for our ListenerPC and MarketPC software.

ListenerPC software provides you with a thorough view of how listeners use your station and when they tune away to other stations.  You can create custom daypart reports, as well get information about Loyalty and Choice.  It's made to work in tandem with your Listener Behavior Report.

MarketPC software puts your station “in the book,” effectively showing how your station fits into your market.  You can report Ratings, Shares, Cume, AQH, Composition and Time Spent Listening estimates for Arbitron's standard dayparts and demographics.  The Socio-Economic option allows you to report estimates by Education Level, Household Income, Household Size or Presence of Children.  MarketPC reports can be station-specific or rankers that include both commercial and non-commercial stations.

Here are the dates for upcoming online sessions:

ListenerPC:  EARLY 2009, DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

MarketPC:  EARLY 2009, DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

If you are interested in attending one or both of these sessions, please send an email message to CNelson@RRConline.org or call 301-774-6686.

If you can’t attend this session, or if this session fills up and is closed to additional attendees, don’t despair!  There will be more sessions in the coming weeks.

Two Hopeful Signs

(5.23.08)

We have some good news regarding public radio’s audience. Listening levels and reach, while continuing to decline for radio overall, now show increases for public radio. Two graphs show data for the spring Arbitron surveys:

Change in Radio & Public Radio Listening Levels. This graph shows a steady decline in overall radio listening levels. However, public radio, which had been on a three survey decline since 2003, now has a positive growth trend from 2006 to 2007.

Change in Radio & Public Radio Reach. This graph shows the continued softening of radio’s reach into the U.S. population. The good news here is that after declines from 2004 through 2006, public radio’s reach increases in 2007.

You’ll notice a much steeper decline for overall radio listening than for reach as people continue to use radio, but are spending less time with the medium. Public radio, on the other hand, is once again showing growth in these areas. In Spring 2007, public radio had a reach of 11.1% of all Americans and generated 5.0% of all radio listening, compared with the 2003 peaks of 11.3% and 5.0%, respectively.

We will be watching to see if the stations in the top markets hold their gains in 2008, since some of the increases in 2007 can be attributed to two stations in two large markets becoming the only all-Classical formats in their respective markets.

Nationwide Data
Public Radio: Up 3% to 28.7 Million

(11.5.08)

Public Radio Audience: Up 3% to 28.7 Million

Arbitron has delivered market-by-market detail for Spring 2008 Public Radio Nationwide.  This year, there is good news for public radio, but overall radio listening continues to decline.

  • CPB-supported stations are reaching more Persons 12+ than ever before.  Following a 3% increase in Spring 2007, the stations climbed another 3% in Spring 2008 to 28,744,600 persons in an average week.
  • Cume Rating for CPB-Stations barely missed exceeding the 11.3% of the US Population (excluding some unmeasured portions of Alaska plus Puerto Rico) achieved in 2003.  The Spring 2008 estimate is also 11.3% -- add another decimal place and the 2003 estimate of 11.32% is just slightly higher than the 11.27% estimate for 2008.
  • CPB-Stations (P12+, Mon-Sun 6a-12m) have fully recovered to a 5.2% share of listening nationally.  This is an all-time high AQH share percentage.
  • AQH Persons (think Listener-Hours) for CPB-Stations increases by 1% since Spring 2007, after the 3% growth reported last year.  If there is another positive year in 2009, CPB-Stations might be able to match the peak AQH persons estimate achieved in 2003.

In the meantime, while the number of Persons 12+ residing in the Arbitron nationwide geography is still growing, up 1% in the past year, use of radio continues to decline.  In 2008, 92.5% of the population tuned in radio in an average week, down from 92.6% last year.  The time spent listening to radio by this cume, on average, was just under 18 hours per week, roughly 45 minutes less than a year ago.

  • Ralph Award
WFUV Wins the 2008 Ralph Award

    (9.26.08)

RRC announced WFUV-FM in New York as the winner of the 2008 RRC Ralph Award on Saturday, September 20th at the Public Radio Program Directors (PRPD) conference in Los Angeles, CA.

The Ralph Award, named for Radio Research Consortium’s mascot and "corporate seal,” was given this year to WFUV-FM as a station that showed strong AQH audience growth over two-book averages from Fall 2004/Spring 2005 through Fall 2007/Spring 2008 as part of the Audience 2010 report’s call three years ago for a reversal of public radio’s stagnating audience growth.

Honorable mentions were also given to KPCC-FM and KUSC-FM, both in Los Angeles.

Click here to see the 2008 Ralph Award slides.

The original Ralph resides at the RRC, but has been known to turn up at stations from time to time, as well as at PRPD conferences! Recent Ralph Award winners are KPCC-FM (Los Angeles), KJZZ-FM (Phoenix) in 2006, WNYC-FM (New York) in 2005, KQED-FM (San Francisco) in 2004 and WLRN-FM (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood) in 2003.
